TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane Closures on Dan Cameron Bridge Start Monday

i 140The N.C. Department of Transportation will intermittently close one lane in each direction on the Dan Cameron Bridge on I-140 over the Northeast Cape Fear River from Monday, May 23 through Thursday, May 26. The closures, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, are necessary for crews to perform routine inspections as part of the biannual inspection process.

Although there will not be any detours, drivers are urged to seek alternate routes.  Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect possible delays.  NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. The NCDOT’s bridge program targets structures that need rehabilitation or replacement across the state. The 2015 Budget signed by Governor McCrory funded replacement of 540 bridges all across the state, and the Governor’s proposed budget for 2016 – 2017 increases repair and replacement funding for bridges by 58%, totaling $242 million.

The Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years.  All bridges go through a natural deterioration or aging process, although each bridge is unique in the way it ages.

Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair, then schedule them accordingly.  If NCDOT inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made. If necessary, NCDOT will post weight restrictions on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.
