NCDOT Continues to Respond to Effects of Hurricane Matthew

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation continues to respond to the effects of Hurricane Matthew and ongoing flooding on roadways in central and eastern North Carolina. Drivers are urged to visit ReadyNC.org or call 5-1-1 for real-time road closure and traffic conditions before they leave.

“Safety remains our top priority as we work to address the damage caused by major flooding on roadways,” said Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson. “While the storm has passed, many roads are still impassable, and conditions in some areas are worsening as floodwaters rise.”

Crews and equipment are being shifted from western North Carolina to assist with recovery efforts in the areas impacted by the storm. More than 1,100 NCDOT employees, nearly 350 pieces of equipment and more than 630 chainsaws have been utilized statewide.

“We continue to stress that motorists should not try to drive through flood waters,” continued Tennyson. “Please pay attention to signs and barricades to help us avoid further tragedy on our roadways.”

After floodwaters recede, NCDOT crews must assess the integrity of the roads and bridges to make sure they are safe for drivers. Roads and bridges could be damaged by floodwaters and debris and require repair.

Several major interstates remain closed due to flooding:

• I-95 in Lumberton: Traffic is being turned around at exit 31 to northbound I-95 to 295 to N.C. 210 to N.C. 24 to U.S. 1 to U.S. 501 to U.S. 74 to I-95.
• I-95 between U.S. 421 (Exit 73) and Exit 58: Traffic is being detoured on U.S. 421 to N.C. 210 to I-295.
• I-40 West between Exit 341 (N.C. 55) and Exit 334 (N.C. 96) between Newton Grove and Benson: Traffic is being detoured along N.C. 55, N.C. 50 and N.C. 96.
