Inspections on the G.V. Barbee Bridge (Old Oak Island Bridge) Require Lane Closures Next Week

OAK ISLAND — Motorists traveling on the G.V. Barbee Bridge (old Oak Island bridge) over the Intracoastal Waterway will likely encounter intermittent lane closures beginning Monday, Oct. 2. The closures are needed for crews to perform routine inspections.

The closures will start at 9 a.m. Monday and continue until 4 p.m. each day through Friday, Oct. 6.

The Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years. Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair. If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made.  If necessary, weight restrictions will be placed on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.

Although there will not be any detours, drivers are urged to seek alternate routes. Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling through the work zone and expect possible delays.
